As I always do. Today's COTM (Car of the minute-I always think, "This is the one." And five minutes later I'm on to something else) is a VW Passat 4motion wagon, with stick and a W8. It sounds like a dream combo, but I've heard pretty horrific things in terms of reliability. Does anyone know them or anything about them?

I looked hard at one when I was shopping recently, but horror stories on PassatWorld scared me off. We are talking engine out to do minor things like changing upstream O2 sensors, and absolutely nobody knowing how to work on such a rare and tempermental engine. Then again, the car I bought instead has spent nearly a full 2 months in the shop after the transmission went to shit 4 days after I bought it, so maybe I should have gotten the W8.

I'm way too scared of that sort of thing. Especially considering that if I had it I'd be autocrossing it, so that's probably a no then.

Also, I owned the V6 version of the B5.5 Passat, and it was damn good...thinking about that Plus another two cylinders and awd really does make me want to buy one, and damn the problems. Fun fact, that Passat remains to this day the car I have achieved the fastest speed in, at 132 mph. Pretty sure my Dart could match it if I removed the limiter, but I have no clue how.

Our family had a 2005 Passat sedan... the thing was.. well it was a nightmare. We bought it new and it had so many problems. First, we had an airbag sensor that wouldn't go off. So, we took it to the dealer. They fixed it, but then while driving, the dashboard fell off. Took it back, the airbag light came back. Took it back, the glovebox wouldn't stay shut, took it back, they killed the whole dash... this was a certified VW dealer that has been in business for over 20 years.
We traded it in for an 07 Accord. It could've been a great car. It was fun to drive, quick, luxurious, and cool, but if they have one problem, they seem to fall apart.

VW need to stop screwing the US over, how could they not make a killing by offering 4 motion on every platform like in Europe.

I have a 04 W8 wagon with an tiptronic. That takes some of the fun out of it, but it's still a beast. A ton of power, for a two-ton wagon.
Fear the check engine light. The light means your about to spend some money. Especially if they say torque convertor. They fit the W8 in there by making everything else small. Including an air filter. The filter that, when it goes will ruin half the engine and will require major repairs. Everything else, and the W8 only came loaded, works fine. Except the heater in the seat, or the moon roof.
